Surfing

Today we rented a car and after visiting Pearl Harbor we took a ride along the North Shore of Oahu. That's where the heavy duty waves form during the winter months. And this winter is no exception. Here's part of a Weather Service warning: Coastal Hazard message

* Surf...Along North and West facing Shores of niihau and kauai...40 to 50 feet. North facing Shores of oahu molokai and maui...Rising Surf to 35 to 45 feet this afternoon. Along West facing Shores of oahu and molokai...Rising to 20 to 30 feet this afternoon.

It was pretty awesome! There was all kinds of slow traffic because people were pulling over to watch the waves and the surfers.

Here are some photos. As is so often the case, the pictures don't really give you the same feeling as real life! I was unable to get any shots of the surfers on a wave. I was talking to some bystanders and they say the surfers wait until they feel it's just right before trying a wave and I guess that "One" did not arrive while I was there. In some you'll see guys on jet skis. There's another where you can see a bunch of the surfers waiting out far.
